30+ Hypotheses Tested, 3 Survivors: What Actually Beats Vegas in CFB

Over the past few months, we put thirty-plus betting hypotheses through Rick's Picks' formal backtesting methodology. We tested everything: SP+ ratings, FPI, returning production, transfer portal value, drive efficiency, time zones, altitude, line movement through key numbers, situational spots, and a dozen more.

Three signals survived. Everything else got rejected by the data.

Here's what worked, what didn't, and what the failures actually mean.

What Survived

1. CFB Key Numbers (Spread Confidence Modifier) Margin distributions in college football cluster heavily on certain integers -- above all 3 and 7, which together account for roughly 18% of all FBS final margins. When the closing line sits exactly on one of those numbers, the spread is "sticky" -- it's hard to move and small bets won't flip the outcome. When it sits within half a point of one, it's "unstable" -- a half-point buy can land you on a profitable side.

We don't bet ON this directly. We use it as a confidence modifier: -5 confidence when the line sits on a key number, +3 when it's within 0.5. Train and test confirmed the CFB margin distribution is stable: the top-10 margins overlap 90% across the split, and 90% against the 2025 season alone.

One refinement from the 2025 re-validation: our original list also included 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28. Under Bonferroni-corrected testing, only 3 and 7 replicate at full strength; 14 is real but marginal (kept at half weight); 17, 21, and 24 turned out to be artifacts (21 and 24 actually landed BELOW the uniform baseline in 2025). We trimmed the engine's set to 3, 7, and a half-weighted 14.

2. Cold Weather Lowers Totals When the temperature is below 40°F and the game isn't in a dome, scoring drops by an average of 2.7 points in our train data and 2.6 in test (94% retention). It's our most-strengthened signal: when we first promoted it, the test effect was only -1.5 (53% retention, right at our threshold), but adding the 2025 season pushed test retention to 94% -- 2025 alone came in at -5.1 points on cold games. The market doesn't fully price this. We discount totals by about 2 points (roughly three-quarters of the train effect, for safety) on cold outdoor games. This is our only Walters-style signal that affects the math directly.

3. Big Ten Games Go Under Across 11 seasons, when a Big Ten team plays, the total runs UNDER by an average of 2.68 points in train and 4.27 points in test (2023-2025) -- actually getting STRONGER in test. Big Ten football's defensive identity is real and the market under-corrects for it. We apply a -2.68 point adjustment to totals when either team is from the Big Ten -- deliberately the train value, not the bigger test number, because chasing the holdout is how you overfit.

What Didn't Survive (And Why That's Interesting)

Team-Rating Signals (SP+, FPI, talent, recruiting) After removing look-ahead bias, all of them produced ~50% test ATS hit rates. The market already prices these in. The "edges" come from the same public data feeds we have access to, so by the time the line closes, the rating is already baked in.

Specifically: SP+ came in at 49.5% on test and FPI at 50.0%. Talent composite: 50.6% (and it went the wrong way in 2025, at 47.2%). Recruiting class rankings: 50.1%. The brokers know about your favorite ratings system.

Situational Angles (Letdown, Lookahead, Revenge) The "fade letdown favorite" hypothesis (a top-10 team coming off a marquee win) became testable after a rankings backfill -- and promptly sign-flipped: 48.3% in train (the wrong direction) against 57.0% in test. A test-only trend with no train support is exactly what the methodology filters. The revenge angle (back teams who lost to this opponent last year) briefly looked interesting at 53.9% on 2023-24 test games, but the pooled 2023-2025 test came back to 52.8% and 2025 alone was 50.7% -- and train was only 50.8% all along.

In-Season Form (Hot/Cold Teams) The classic "fade the hot team" regression-to-mean angle: 52.0% train, 49.5% test. The opposite (back the hot team) briefly looked promising on 2023-24 test data (52.6%), but the pooled 2023-2025 test settled at 52.0% and 2025 alone was 50.4% -- with no train support either way. Markets adjust to recent form faster than people assume.

Line Movement (CLV-side ATS) Betting whichever side the line moved toward from open to close: 49.4% train / 48.9% test, and 47.1% in 2025 -- its worst season yet. The closing line is genuinely sharp; once it moves, the move is already priced in.

Moneyline Value Looked great at +14.7% ROI on train at one threshold -- collapsed to -1.1% on the 2023-2025 test, and -6.7% in 2025 alone. Textbook overfit signature.

Our Own Power Ratings (v2 Grid Search) Grid-searched 36 parameter configurations of our own power-ratings walk. The locked configuration hit 49.7% on the 2023-2025 test; even the hindsight-best grid cell only managed 51.3%. Below the 52.4% break-even. Tuning didn't unlock it.

What The 90% Failure Rate Actually Means

It's not that our methodology is too strict -- it's that CFB betting markets are extraordinarily efficient. Pretty much every team-quality stat and every famous "sharp angle" has been bet enough that the closing line absorbs it.

The edges that DO remain in college football fall into two categories:

  1. Structural quirks of CFB scoring distribution -- the key numbers, the Big Ten defensive identity. These are stable across seasons because they reflect how the game is played, not what people bet on.
  1. Game-environment factors the market under-weights -- cold weather on totals. These exist because the market is built on team-level data, not weather-game-by-weather-game adjustments.

Anything that looks like edge from team-rating data alone is almost certainly look-ahead bias or random variance in a small sample. We've watched both happen repeatedly.

The Honest Bottom Line

Rick's Picks promotes a signal only when eight seasons of train data (2015-2022) and three seasons of test data (2023-2025) both say yes, AND the effect survives the -110 vig. Out of thirty-plus tested, three did -- and when we re-scored everything against the completed 2025 season, all three survived while zero of the rejects earned their way back in. That's the floor for what we'll put in front of you as something the math actually supports.
